If you enjoy scrapbooking or card-making, or know someone who does, the Upland Hills Auxiliary’s Crop for a Cause event is for you! This unique fundraiser allows participants a full day to work on their paper crafting projects, learn new techniques, have access to vendors on-site, and enjoy lunch. • Iowa County United Fund Board Tours of Upland Hills Health, Views Contributions
 
   

On August 25, the United Fund Board held its meeting at Upland Hills Health. At the conclusion of the meeting, the board members were given a tour of Upland Hills Health. The tour included viewing of fluid status monitors in Home Care and portable computer stations in Dialysis, which were purchased with grant monies from the United Fund of Iowa County.

  
   
   
 
• Kopp Family Shows Appreciation for Upland Hills Hospice with Gift
 
   

Gail Kopp was first diagnosed with cancer in 1991 in her right breast; then in 1996, a new cancer in her left breast, which led to a malignant tumor in her brain in 1998. After brain surgery, she was cancer-free for 10 years until she was diagnosed with cancer again in January 2008—this time terminal pancreatic cancer. After all she’d endured, Gail was determined to live her days to their fullest.

Seniors attending the SUN (Seniors United for Nutrition) program at Grace Lutheran Church on August 13 will get a dose of education along with their meal. The Diabetes Self Management Education Program at Upland Hills Health is sponsoring a session focusing on diabetes prevention education.

Dr. Barbara Hostetler recently joined the team of doctors providing exceptional care at Upland Hills Health. Dr. Hostetler is a OB/GYN specialist and will begin seeing patients at the end of July.

  
   
   
 
• Upland Hills Health Adds to Diane Schaaf, R.N. Memorial Scholarship at SWTC
 
   

Upland Hills Health recently added $500 to the endowment used for the Diane Schaaf, R.N., Memorial Scholarship at Southwest Technical College. The endowment for the scholarship was established by Upland Hills Health last year, after the tragic death of Diane Schaaf, Home Care nurse at Upland Hills Health and wound care instructor at SWTC.

  
   
   
 
• Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners on Staff at Upland Hills Health
 
   
Sele Hufton, R.N. and Ginny Haas, R.N., long-time members of the nursing team at Upland Hills Health’s Emergency Department, are trained and practicing as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, or SANEs.  
   
   
 
• Upland Hills Health received donation for Home Care and Dialysis Services from United Fund of Iowa County
 
   
This last year United Fund of Iowa County donated over $60,000 to over 60 community organizations and designated charities. Upland Hills Health was grateful for the $2,410 received that will go towards equipment to enhance the delivery of care for dialysis and home care patients.  
   
   
 
• Area Lions & Lionesses tour new and renovated areas of Upland Hills Health
 
Over 70 area Lions gathered at Upland Hills Health to enjoy fellowship, dinner and a tour of various service areas on April 14th.  
Members got to see and learn about improvements made in the ER, Imaging and OB Suites.  
   
   
 
• State Program taps into Upland Hills Health Cardiac Rehab program for expertise
 
The State of Wisconsin’s Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program has been working to establish a registry of Cardiac Care Patients.  
The registry will allow researchers to track individual patients, care effectiveness, and outcomes for different demographic groups. In short, the results could greatly impact and facilitate improvement and effectiveness of care by monitoring historical results.  
   
   
 
 
• Home Care awarded a deficiency-free rating during recent State Survey
 
   
April 17th was a day of triumph for the Upland Hills Home Care team. Still mourning the loss of their treasured colleague, Diane Schaaf RN--who died a year ago to the day—the team learned that they earned deficiency-free status after a recent state survey. Deficiency-free is the highest ranking an organization can earn.  
   
   
 
• Upland Hills Health Hosts 4-H Donators
 
The Rockwell Mills 4-H Club in Dodgeville got the opportunity to tour areas of Upland Hills Health on Saturday.  
About 75 4-H members and parents spent the evening on a tour of the new Wellness Center facility, as well as the Kidney Dialysis Center, set to open next month. The group recently made a generous donation to the Dialysis Center.  
   
   
 
• Upland Hills Health Patient Satisfaction Scores beat the state and national average!
 
On March 28th the Medicare/Government website www.hopsitalcompare.hhs.gov published patient satisfaction scores for hospitals throughout the nation for the first time.  
Data shows that Upland Hills Health has satisfied –and in many cases even exceeded—patients’ expectations. In fact, they are doing a better job than most hospitals in Wisconsin or even the U.S.

• March 25th is Annual American Diabetes Alert Day
 
Today, nearly 21 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes.  
One-third of those—or more than six million do not know they have diabetes. Early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment and delaying or preventing some of its complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and death.

A motivational tradition, Upland Hills Health Cardiopulmonary Nurses hosted the fourth annual Holiday Health Challenge in February. Designed to keep their patients on a healthy track during the holidays, this annual event has become a socializing favorite. This year participants are challenged to track their minutes exercise routine, stress management and healthy breakfasts.

The 14th Annual Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Scholarship & Awards Ceremony marked the first presentation of a nursing scholarship honoring former Upland Hills Health nurse, Diane Schaaf.

• Senator Dale Schultz tours new and improved facilities at Upland Hills Health
 
   
Friday, February 22nd, Senator Dale Schultz met with Upland Hills Health Administrator, Phyllis Fritsch to review progress on the recent building project and issues relevant to healthcare in Iowa County. Besides discussing current legislative activities, Schultz spent time touring the recently completed Medical Office Building and Imaging Services Center.  
 
   
   
 
• Senior Strength Training Class Starts in March
 
   
Aging bodies don’t need to become weak and frail. This unique class is designed for seniors with achy, aging joints or arthritis. Taught by Joan Pape, a Certified Fitness Specialist for Older Adults (ISSA), this class addresses the special needs of seniors.  
 
   
   
 
• ER outperforms community hospital average
 
   
Results from the Level One Heart Attack program study conducted by St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison shows Upland Hills Health Emergency Services team consistently outperforms the community hospital average.  
 
   
   
 
• Massage Therapist Joins Upland Hills Health
 
   
Upland Hills Health has added Massage Therapy to its long list of services. Stephanie Albertus joined the staff at the beginning of February and works through the Therapy and Wellness Center.  
 
   
   
 
• Grant Awarded for Mobile Compression Equipment
 
   
Funded by a grant from the Wisconsin Rural Hospital Flexibility Program, Upland Hills Health was able to purchase AutoPulse devices for Dodgeville and Mineral Point EMS teams. Director of Cardiopulmonary Services John Mason, along with Emergency Room (ER) personnel, played integral parts in receiving the grant.  
 
   
   
 
• Upland Hills Health Donates Used Equipment
 
   
With new buildings comes new furniture and upgraded equipment for Upland Hills Health. What to do with the bulk of unneeded items?  
 
Those items are finding a new home in Nicaragua. Father Miller, a priest in the LaCrosse, WI area, is collecting our unneeded furniture, medical equipment and more, including an X-ray machine, a suction machine, a Hoyer lift, and hospital cribs.  
   
 
• Upland Hills Health holds Mad Hatters Tea Party Brunch to thank volunteers
 
   
Over 30 volunteers braved blizzard conditions to join in the fun at the Upland Hills Health Mad Hatters Tea Party held on January 17th.  
 
Volunteers and auxiliary members came together at the Dodger Bowl for a hearty egg and sausage breakfast.  
   
 
• New Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist Seeing Patients at Upland Hills Health
 
   
Dr. Matthew Hinsley is now seeing patients every Friday at the Dean Specialty Clinic inside Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville.  
 
Hinsley is an ENT (Ear, Nose Throat) specialist, who completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison. His practice interests include: pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck tumors and oncology, laryngology and voice disorders, and thyroid disease.  
   
   
 
• First Baby of 2008 Arrives at Upland Hills Health
 
   
Silvan William Wiedenhoeft made his arrival at 1:17 am on January 4, making him the first baby born at Upland Hills Health in 2008. He was born a healthy 9 lbs, 11 oz and 22 1/2 inches long to Kristina and Alex Wiedenhoeft of Mineral Point.
