As Father's Day nears, think about men's health
With Father's Day nearing, what a great time to talk to the men in your life about their health.  Research has shown men visit their doctors less frequently and are less likely to seek timely medical attention than women.  Father's Day is a good time to encourage your male loved ones to pick up the phone and schedule a health check up.  Some helpful men's health information is available at www.menshealth.com or by calling 1-800-955-2002.

Lab is ‘best performer’
Hats off to staff in the laboratory who received official notification of their “Best Performer” ranking in the 2003 Q-TRACKS Annual Summary Report. This is a national recognition, endorsed by the College of American Pathologists.

Pins presented to nurses on their special day
Linda Hohneke, Assistant Administrator – Patient Care Services, presented nurses at Upland Hills Health with symbolic Florence Nightengale Lamp pins as a token of appreciation to coincide with National Nurses Day this week. Florence Nightengale is considered to be the founder of modern nursing. She helped transform nursing into a respectable profession and recognized the value of discipline, training and organization. She earned the name of Lady with the Lamp as she tended to the wounded at night. Her ideas on how hospitals should be designed influenced the hospital construction in the late 19th Century.

Plant Operations plants trees
On Earth Day, April 22, the Plant Operations Department planted 1,000 trees on our property.  A combination of white spruce and white pine, purchased from the Dodgeville Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were planted. The group utilized a planter, loaned by the DNR, and a tractor, loaned by Steve McCarthy, Dir. Therapy Center, who also assisted with the project.

CrestRidge plans health fair
The public is invited to attend a health fair at CrestRidge Assisted Living facility on Thursday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The event will include wellness checks, health information and tours of CrestRidge. Presentations on “Living Wills” and “Healthy Diets” will also be offered. Refreshments, live music and a bake sale will add to the festivities.  Please invite your family and friends to attend.

Cardio-pulmonary Rehab team competes in special event
In early April, eight Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab patients from Upland Hills Health, along with spouses and friends, attended the fifth annual “Heart of Gold Games,” held at the HoChunk Wellness Center, Baraboo. The event emphasized skills in balance, accuracy, agility, hand-eye coordination, strength, endurance, and self-prediction of exercise capacity. Nine hospitals participated with a total of approximately 150 participants. Upland Hills Health’s team won the “Most Improved” program award, and a number of team members brought home individual ribbons and medals, including Ted Graber, a patient who took first place as the overall top male athlete. Becky Tank, RN, and Marianne Crowley, RN, coached and accompanied the athletes.
The event begins on Friday with a kick-off lap for cancer survivors at 6 p.m. If you know of someone who has or is fighting cancer, please invite him or her to attend and demonstrate how we are working to win the battle against cancer. Survivors do not have to be on a team to participate. Another meaningful part of the event is the lighting of luminaria to honor and remember loved ones. The lighting occurs at 10 p.m. on Friday night. If cancer has touched the life of someone you know and love, this is a great way to remember or honor this person. Luminaria can be purchased for $5 each, and you can place a special message on each bag. Contact Maria Leary or Mary Allness to purchase lights.

Walk, have fun and support the American Cancer Society
Walkers are being sought for the Upland Hills Health Relay for Life team. This is a fun, fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, taking place on June 11 and 12 at Harris Park, Dodgeville. Team members are asked to walk on the track inside the Ley Pavilion, and the goal is to have a team member on the track at all times throughout the event – from Friday evening through 10 a.m. Saturday. This event has grown to become a family event with food, games, camping and entertainment. Maria Leary, RN, is the Upland Hills Health team captain. Call her at ext. 2920 to join the team.
