Upland Hills Health offers delicious lesson to area church camp

Fifty-three hot and enthusiastic young church campers hiked to Upland Hills Health last week for a quick and tasty presentation by the Hospital’s Nutrition Services Staff. Campers munched on apple & dip snacks and milk while Director Liz Berkey, RD presented the importance and components of good nutrition.
Patricia Lawson, Director of Marketing & Community Relations explained, “If we teach children healthy habits while they’re young we can help our community to stay healthier. We were happy to have the opportunity to reach out to these children.”
The Church Campers were part of the Grace Lutheran Church Vacation Bible school program. Each child went home with a bag of goodies that included a sport water bottle and packets of sunscreen.

Upland Hills Health & Southwest Wisconsin Area Health Education Center team up to improve care of Hispanic patients

In a focused effort to better serve the Hispanic residents in our community, Upland Hills Health and Southwest WI AHEC (Area Health Education Center) co-sponsored an initiative to train and increase awareness with area caregivers.
Efforts included developing Spanish resources; training nursing, social services, clinic and emergency personnel in basic Spanish language skills to overcome initial barriers; and  providing admission documents that are  translated into Spanish.
A survey was conducted of Upland Hills Health departments and area agencies to determine the Spanish resources currently available and what is needed.   The results are available to all agencies to promote the sharing of resources.
For more information about this project and the grant that funds it contact Michelle Helin, RN, Staff Education Coordinator at Upland Hills Health, 608-930-8000.

Not far to the west of Madison, in the town of Dodgeville, Upland Hills Health gives rural people the same highquality of care they’d get in the city.
Treating patients from birth through their retirement years, providing everything from top-level clinical treatment to helpful preventive education, this medical facility is here for its community. This is a small critical access hospital with a remarkable range of services. “People think they have to go to Madison, but they really don’t,” says Patricia Lawson, director of marketing and community relations for Upland Hills Health. “They’ll find a commitment to healthcare excellence right here.”

Upland Hills Health identified as qualified site for Respiratory Therapist Clinical Rotations

Based on the program, diagnostics, equipment and processes implemented in their Cardiopulmonary Services department, Upland Hills Health was recently approved for Respiratory Therapist Clinical Rotations in the collaborative program between Southwest Technical College in Fennimore and Western Wisconsin Technical College in LaCrosse.
A matter of convenience, area RT (Respiratory Therapist) students will no longer have to travel to Madison hospitals to complete their training. “Upland Hills Health employs the same processes and technology as the big hospitals”, stated John Mason RT, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services, “we just don’t have the volume or subspecialties needed in a major metropolitan area.”
After reviewing hospital facilities throughout Southwest Wisconsin, only Upland Hills Health met the required standards.
For more information on the Southwest Technical College’s Respiratory Therapy curriculum contact Student Services at 1-800-362-3322 ext 2354.

Upland Hills Health donates ITD technology to Area EMS squads

In an effort to increase survival rates of cardiac arrest patients Upland Hills Health purchased advanced medical devices called ITDs—Impedance Threshold Devices—for area EMS squads.
The ITD increases circulation by regulating air flow into the lungs during the chest compression phase of CPR. The device has been shown to dramatically and significantly increase blood return to the heart and blood flow to the vital organs during CPR. Increasing blood flow until the heart can be restarted is critical to improving patient survival rates with good neurological function.

Nutrition Services adds state-of-the-art precision to hospital’s weight management services

Upland Hills Health nutrition professionals are now armed with the accuracy of an indirect calorimeter to measure an individual’s true metabolic rate. By conducting a simple breath test,  they are able to measure an individual’s resting metabolic rate.

Resting metabolic rate can account for up to 75% of the calories a person burns each day. This scientifically determined rate helps caregivers establish the patient’s best calorie intake to assist in reaching their weight and health goals.
