Sleep
Disorders Clinic
About the Upland Hills Health Sleep Disorders
Clinic
The Sleep Disorders Clinic was established in 1998 to provide
our patients with local access to sleep study services.
Most clients are referred to the program for investigation
of excessive daytime sleepiness, or snoring, such as is common
in the condition called "Obstuctive Sleep Apnea", the most
common sleep disorder. However, there are over eighty distinct
sleep disorder catagories which have been defined, most of
which can now be sucessfully treated. Besides Obstructive
Sleep Apnea, other sleep disorders include Narcolepsy, Restless
Leg Syndrome, and Parasomnias.
Clients come to us after an evaluation by their physician.
The physician might refer the patient to the sleep disorders
clinic or to a specialist. These specialists include selected
pulmonologists, ENT physicians, internal medicine physicians,
and neurologists. If a sleep study is needed after consultation
with your physician or a specialist, a request is forwarded
to the sleep disorders clinic.
Normally, one overnight session is sufficient. However,
depending on the results of the overnight study, another visit
may be required. The overnight studies begin at approximately
8 pm on the evening of the test and end the next morning.
You are provided with a private bathroom, shower, dressing
area, and breakfast, if you desire. Your room will be like
a "hotel" room!
What happens during a sleep study
Our clinic has a private bedroom. We provide all linen.
The room is quiet, darkened and air conditioned. There is
a private bathroom with a shower.
Upon arrival, you are shown where you will sleep and asked
to change into sleepwear. Then you will proceed to the bedroom,
where we will connect physiological sensors. These are painless
and comfortable enough to allow for sleep.
We use scalp electrodes, facial electrodes, chest electrodes,
leg electrodes and a nasal airflow sensor. The polysomnography
technician applies the electrodes and will be more than pleased
to answer any questions. When the connections are complete,
you will return to your room at which time we will check to
see that all the sensors are working properly. We will ask
you to perform some movements, such as blinking, moving your
legs etc.
Patients are permitted to sleep as they would at home, e.g.
rolling over, personal pillows, bathroom breaks, etc.
A technician is always present and able to provide assistance
at any time. The overnight test lasts approximately 7 to 8
hours. Note: the technician may on occasion enter the room
to make some technical adjustments, but we try to interfere
as litttle as possible. We would like patients to enjoy uninterrupted
sleep as much as possible.
Things to know in preparation for a sleep study
Please enter the hospital at our main entrance. You can obtain
assistance from the personnel at the information desk. They
will assist you in registering, and will collect your insurance/billing
information. If you have an insurance card, please bring it
with you. The information desk staff will then direct you
to the sleep lab.
Special instructions
- Please eat a normal meal before 7:00 pm NOTE: NO CAFFEINE
(coffee, tea, coke, etc) after noon on the day of the test.
- On the day of your test, please abstain from alcohol
consumption of any type.
- Do not take sedatives (sleeping pills) on the day of
the study. We strongly suggest you refrain from napping
on the day of the study. If you have a tendancy to feel
sleepy when you drive, please have someone else drive and
pick you up. DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF.
- If you are male and normally shave, please shave in the
evening before you come to the study. This will help us
obtain better recordings. Patients with beards are not expected

hair and abstain from using any face creams or lotions.
Wear little or no make-up.
- If this is your first sleep study and you have been using
a CPAP or BiPAP at home, please do not use your equipment
for two nights before your study. If this results in your
being too sleepy to drive, have someone drive and pick you
up. DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF.
What to bring to the sleep study
- Appropriate sleep wear. Something you feel comfortable
in. Do not buy sleep wear for the occasion. Even sweat suits
are suitable. You are also encouraged to bring your own
pillow if it helps you sleep.
- Breakfast will be provided if you desire. If you have
a special dietary need please let us know.
- Personal toiletries, e.g. toothbrush, comb, shampoo,
etc.
- Any medication you normally take, prescription and non-
prescription.
- Optional housecoat, reading material to keep you entertained
while you wait.
Sleep Lab Scheduling
A physician order and referral is required before a sleep
study may be scheduled. Once your physician or specialist
has determined that you require a sleep study, he or she will
contact the Sleep Disorders Clinic with the physician order
and referral. We will then contact you to set up a time for
your study and confirm your insurance, etc. We will also send
you some screening questionaires for you to complete before
your scheduled time. We will do our best to accommodate your
needs, and we are always willing to answer any questions that
you may have.
CPAP Therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
Millions of people suffer from sleep disturbances, among
them are tens of thousands with a disorder known as Obstructive
Sleep Apnea.
The Sleep Clinic staff, working in consultation with physicians,
monitor patients during sleep studies to diagnose sleep disorders.
When investigations confirm sleep apnea, the physician may
prescribe therapy call CPAP or its Cousin BiPAP.
