Quality Measures

Scheduled Elective Deliveries Not Medically Necessary

This measure looks at making sure UHH follows the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) standard of requiring 39 completed weeks gestation prior to ELECTIVE delivery, either vaginal or Cesarean section. Compared to spontaneous labor, elective inductions may result in more cesarean births and longer maternal lengths of stay. There is also research that notes that elective induction doubles the cesarean delivery rate. Repeat elective cesarean births before 39 weeks gestation may also result in higher rates of adverse respiratory outcomes, mechanical ventilation, sepsis and hypoglycemia for the newborns. UHH strives to keep our elective deliveries to less than 1%.

Cesarean Births

This measure is looking at how often women who have never delivered before end up delivering by Cesarean section. Cesarean births are associated with higher morbidity compared to vaginal deliveries with both the current and future pregnancies, have higher incidences of complications, longer lengths of stay and have higher health care costs UHH is committed to ensuring the safety of our delivering moms and babies. Because of the higher risk of C-section delivery, UHH has a goal of 20% of first time moms delivering by primary C-section.
