Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions that impair a person's ability to move or function normally. Our highly trained physical therapists use exercise prescription, manual therapy techniques and various modalities to help restore mobility, relieve pain, improve strength and maximize occupational and sports performance.

Typical diagnoses treated in physical therapy include:

  • Sport-related injuries
  • Post-orthopedic surgery (fractures, total knee replacement, total hip replacement, knee arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction)
  • Neuromuscular disorders (stroke, head injury, Multiple Sclerosis)

Other specialized areas of treatment include:

  • Balance and dizziness evaluation and treatment
  • Pediatric evaluation and treatment

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy focuses on evaluation and treatment of injuries, disorders and diseases affecting the upper extremities (hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder). Our occupational therapists work to help people regain or improve the function and fine motor control necessary for daily care tasks and occupational duties.

Typical diagnoses treated in occupational therapy:

  • Orthopedic injuries affecting the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Neuromuscular disorders (stroke, head injury, Multiple Sclerosis)
  • Post-surgery therapy

Other specialized areas of treatment include:

  • Lymphedema evaluation and treatment
  • Urinary incontinence evaluation and treatment
  • Fitting of splints, braces and supports
  • Ergonomic assessment

Speech Therapy

The UHH speech language pathologists are highly trained in the evaluation and treatment of a wide range of disorders involving speech, articulation, language, cognition and swallowing. The speech therapists work one-on-one with patients and families to develop strategies to improve deficits in these areas with the goal of improving communication and function. They work with people of all ages with disorders such as developmental delay, autism or cerebral palsy or following stroke or those who've suffered from a stroke or head injury.

Athletic Training/Sports Medicine

Our athletic trainers work in the clinic, in the training room and on the field to evaluate and rehabilitate injured athletes. Their goal is to safely return athletes to competition as quickly as possible. They work closely with coaches to design injury prevention and strengthening programs and with area physicians to expedite further medical follow-up when needed. Our sports medicine team believes that proper conditioning and biomechanics will improve performance and reduce the likelihood of injury. That's why we offer seasonal sports performance and conditioning classes, a golf clinic and throwing clinic for area athletes.
