When you say something special is happening here, what do you mean?
Upland Hills Health is taking a major step forward in preparing our facilities for the delivery of health care for the next 30 years. We have examined the campus and cataloged our needs—and hired independent consultants to review the campus and let us know the areas of greatest need. The study revealed:
Inadequate surgical space. We will be doubling the surgical space, creating modern, rooms that will accommodate the new digital equipment surgeons are being trained to use today.
Aging patient rooms. We will build all new patient rooms – with a focus on creating environments that promote the healing process. Private rooms. Lovely views. Sized to accommodate needed patient care equipment, as well as comfortable seating areas for vising family, friends, and loved ones. Most importantly, we will build new birthing rooms (OB) with an adjacent C-Section room for quick access when needed.
Opportunity to improve accessibility. We are creating a campus that is easier to navigate. More services will be located near the center of the building, including the Surgical Services entrance and a new elevator to patient rooms. The new floor plan will make it easier to find your way around.
Why do you need to build?
We are building to meet the needs of our patients today and to meet our anticipated needs for the next 30 years. This project also includes space for future expansions. Building today saves money tomorrow.
How much will this cost and who is going to pay for it?
The total cost is estimated to be $32M. Approximately one third of the cost will be paid with Upland Hills Health cash savings. The Upland Hills Health Foundation seeks to raise a portion of the project cost from the community. The rest will be financed through USDA and bonds.
When the cost of health care is going up, how can you justify spending this kind of money?
It is the fiscally responsible thing to do. We are addressing needs, not just wants. Two independent architectural firms confirmed the deficiencies in our building. By building now, we will be saving future costs. Additionally, we believe interest rates will begin to escalate as the economy continues to improve. It is conservative to lock in rates now for the long term, building now for the future. This project will position UHH well for the next thirty years.
Why don’t you try to just “make do?”
We wish that were possible. But, there is no way to dramatically increase the size of the surgical suites, add a C-Section suite to OB, and improve patient wayfinding without making these changes.
The building looks just fine. Why don’t you invest some of that money into your employees, rather than the building?
UHH has been diligent about monitoring and increasing salaries as budgets permit, and we have a team working on improving other pay categories (e.g. call, shift). By investing our dollars in remodeling and updating our building, the cost-based reimbursements we receive from insurance company’s increase. This increase in reimbursements allows us to continue to be diligent about increasing salaries and investing in our employees on a continual basis.
Can I expect my healthcare bill to go up as a result of this project?
No. The expense of this building project will not impact the cost of receiving health care services at Upland Hills Health.
How will this building project benefit me?
We are creating an environment that will be better for patients and staff alike. The new spaces will allow us to improve the services we offer. An up-to-date and efficient building will secure healthcare services for our community, and will secure jobs, into the future.
How long will this take? When do you expect it to be done?
Nineteen to twenty-four months. By 2020, we anticipate all of the construction should be completed.
