More than 269,000, or nearly 80 percent of pediatric emergency department visits occurred in Wisconsin community hospitals. Preparing for and caring for sick or injured children is top priority at Upland Hills Health Hospital and Clinics (UHH).
Upland Hills Health emergency department staff recently completed a statewide training program created by the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children (WI EMSC) on the newest evidence-based pediatric emergency care.
Upon completion of the program, UHH implemented vital signs and assessment guidelines with the pediatric patient in mind; drafted quality improvement plans that include pediatric patient reviews; and ensured that nurses are certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
“Children are not small adults. From the treatment to the medications we prescribe, they require special consideration and fast action,” said Dr. Charles Pearce, emergency physician and UHH vice president of medical affairs. “The WI EMSC training complements our team’s expertise and experience. Parents can trust that we will provide the best, most advanced care to their child when they need it most.”
