Finding the Right Care, Close to Home
By Amy Philipps, Breast Cancer Survivor
When I look back on my breast cancer journey, one thing stands out above all else: I never had to leave Upland Hills Health. From genetic testing before my diagnosis to surgery, recovery, and every follow-up visit since, nearly all of my care happened right here, close to home. The team at UHH guided me through every stage with compassion, professionalism, and genuine concern for my well-being. It’s the kind of care I couldn’t find anywhere else.
My journey started with an increase in breast cancer diagnoses within my family. I decided to pursue genetic testing – available at Upland Hills Health. That decision ended up saving my life.
When the results showed a genetic mutation, I immediately met with Dr. Jared Linebarger, one of only a handful of fellowship-trained breast surgeons in Wisconsin. From the very beginning, he helped me map out a plan for proactive surveillance. His guidance was clear and compassionate. I started regular mammograms and MRIs, all done at Upland Hills Health.
When an MRI revealed a suspicious lump, I didn’t have to travel far or wait long for answers. My biopsy was done right here, and the results confirmed invasive ductal and lobular breast cancer. I still remember Dr. Linebarger calling me personally to walk through everything. He explained my diagnosis in detail, answered every question, and helped me understand what came next. In that moment of shock and worry, I felt comfort in knowing I was in the right place.
Dr. Linebarger told me I had seven different tumors, spread throughout my breast. A mastectomy was necessary, and he gently helped me consider my options – including whether to remove the other breast as a preventative measure. He never pushed; he listened. Ultimately, I decided to have a double mastectomy.
Almost all of my care happened at Upland Hills Health. Through every step, the people here were professional, kind, and compassionate. I was always kept informed and treated with respect. I never felt like “just another patient.” I felt incredibly safe having such major surgery close to home, surrounded by a team that cared about me as a person.
I feel strongly that I’m living proof you don’t have to travel far to receive exceptional, life-changing care – it’s right here at home.
