About four months ago, 40-year Upland Hills Health employee Karl Pustina unexpectedly passed away due to a tragic tractor accident, just a few months after his retirement. The same week as his funeral, the Upland Hills Health Board of Trustees had a long-scheduled board meeting and strategy retreat planned to be held at the Hotel Julien in Dubuque. To allow employees and board members an opportunity to attend the funeral, the decision was made to cancel plans for Dubuque — at the last minute — and hold the meetings at the hospital. It was anticipated that there would be some residual costs from the hotel, with the cancellation of 13 rooms, 3 group meals and conference room arrangements at the eleventh hour, but sales manager Madelynn Harris and her team at the Hotel Julien zeroed out all charges. In addition, the sales staff sent a bouquet of flowers to the Upland Hills staff, expressing their sympathy. That’s compassionate customer service! UHH Board Chairman Jim Massey and his wife, Anne, visited Dubuque this week, stayed at the Hotel Julien and offered a thank-you to Harris and her staff. Massey pledged that the UHH would make plans to schedule a future event at the historic hotel.
