Breastfeeding: The Early Days
Molli Moen, Lactation Consultant & RN
Hey Momma!
This post is for you.
You’re getting close to the end of your pregnancy. You have checklists to complete and so many worries running through your mind. Or maybe you’ve just delivered your sweet little one and aren’t sure how you’re going to get through the next hour… day… or week.
We see you—and we’re here to help you through those first few days and weeks after birth.
Many moms plan to breastfeed but aren’t sure what to expect. As a lactation nurse and experienced momma, I can tell you: every baby and every breastfeeding journey is different. Many factors affect your experience—gestation, delivery, breast tissue, emotions, stress (just to name a few)—and a lot of these are out of your control.
Here are a few things every new mom should expect during the early days of breastfeeding:
1. Newborns have tiny tummies, so they’ll need to feed frequently.
2. Skin-to-skin contact during feedings helps with latching, bonding, and milk production.
3. Watch your newborn feed: signs of an effective latch include rhythmic sucking, a strong tugging sensation, audible swallows, and even uterine cramping (yes, it’s painful—but it’s actually a great sign!).
4. Your breasts will go through many changes in the first two weeks. At first, they may feel soft and produce small amounts of colostrum. Then, they may become full with tender or sore nipples. Eventually, they’ll feel full and then soften after feedings.
5. At the end of the day, give yourself grace. Breastfeeding can be challenging—but with the right support and a plan that works for you and your baby, it can also be incredibly rewarding.
