Foot Pain

There are many different varieties of foot pain that can best be treated by a foot and ankle specialist to get the most accurate diagnosis as well as the largest variety of treatment plans.

Sprains

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of a ligament within the foot or ankle. Many times these are treated conservatively with physical therapy if needed.

Bunions

A bunion is an abnormal angle of the big toe with a bony prominence that can become irritated with shoe gear or painful with activities. Bunions are incredibly common occurrence most commonly in females. These can be treated conservatively, however many times these do lead to surgical straightening of the big toe.

Fractures

A fracture is a broken bone following an injury. Fractures can be treated conservatively by immobilization with a walking boot. Occasionally fractures need to be placed into alignment surgically. Fractures often require frequent x-rays to monitor healing prior to returning to activities to ensure proper healing.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of a broad ligament on the bottom of the heel. This is commonly seen with sharp pain in the mornings that typically improves with activities, however this can return after sitting for a brief period. Plantar fasciitis can be treated with good shoes, orthotics, physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and steroid injections. Rarely does this condition require surgery.

Heel Pain

Similar to Plantar fasciitis – Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the broad ligament on the bottom of the heel. This is commonly seen with sharp pain in the mornings that typically improves with activities; however, this can return after sitting for a brief period. Plantar fasciitis can be treated with good shoes, orthotics, physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, and steroid injections. Rarely does this condition require surgery.

Ankle replacement

Ankle replacements are growing in popularity as technology continues to improve. Ankle replacements are typically less known about compared to knee or hip replacements despite there being many similarities. Many patients are preferring ankle replacement versus ankle fusion, which was the prior traditional method of treating ankle arthritis.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are best treated by a physician to ensure the most appropriate level of care and for the most accurate diagnosis. Proper diagnosis and treatment can lead to earlier return to activities as well as preventing further injury or longstanding complications if left untreated.

Wound Care

Wounds can happen for a variety of reasons and can become very challenging in the foot and ankle. An experienced team approach can help heal a wound faster and more effectively to prevent infections and delays to allow patients to return to activities quickly.
